Chemists in pharma industry play a very important role in accessing the safety and quality of medicines by using highly specific and reliable analytical methods based on chromatographic techniques. Efavirenz is drug which is used for the treatment of HIV infection in children and adults. A chromatographic method was developed for the estimation of Efavirenz in pharmaceutical formulations. The method involves Grace-C18 column and mobile phase composition of phosphate buffer and acetonitrile (50:50, v/v). The wavelength of detection is 210nm. This method is highly accurate and can apply for routine quality control samples in pharmaceutical formulations.
The present study focuses primarily on analytical methods which the author has developed using reverse phase technique as an alternative to conventional methods. This experiment estimates the purity of the Efavirenz tablets available in the pharmacy stores. The reported method is reproducible and accurate (99.5- 100%). The method developed is rugged and easily adaptable in quality control labs. The method reported is rapid; results can be obtained within 10 minutes. The method under study is completely validated as per ICH quality guideline. The kinetic behaviour and relative stability of the drug under different conditions of degradation study were evaluated.
